Summer Vacation:
Zappe Trio (June 2000)

Day Thirteen - June 18, 2000

These nice people, Ethel and Harold Olin, were kind enough to allow us two nights lodging. Ethel, an old friend of Steve's stands to the right and Harold is the dangerous looking one on the left (he grew up in the Bronx)!

Shortly after the last picture was taken, we crammed back in the car and drove to Boston to attend church with one of Steve's boyhood ministers, Walt Reuning. His wife, Donna gave us directions to Boston tourist traps which helped keep us occupied.

Connecticut was a quick drive through and traffic kept us in the car for this shot. So, yes, we did see Connecticut.

Day Fourteen - June 19, 2000

Not being totally suicidal, we took the train into New York City on Monday morning. The previous night, we got lost in Brooklyn and decided not to bring the car in again. Becca picks her nose and Chris dreams of Rhode Island.

The kids smile under the Statue of Liberty after a one and a half hour wait in line. We figured out how long we were standing later and it turns out that we went nearly four hours without sitting between Grand Central Station and dinner at  Burger King.

Steve breaks from the pack on our way down and takes the obligatory shot up the statue's dress. Notice Lady Liberty's new steel skeleton... oooh... aaah.

This is our only vertical picture to date. The halo was rather hard to look at directly but the camera made it much easier.

Here's a look from Liberty Island over to Manhattan. The kids are preoccupied with seagulls eating oysters on the shore.

Riding the infamous New York City subway. Becca takes no notice of the atmosphere and freely gabs about TV commercials and tourist sites in the city. Chris tries more to blend in and displays a New York "pissed off commuter" face.

Times Square was an adventure in extreme commercialization. It's like being in a very loud annoying magazine with nothing in it but advertisements and free offers

Day Fifteen - June 20, 2000

On our trip through Philadelphia we got a lot of standard, boring, tourist video clips. However, here's a picture of a famous national symbol that you don't usually see: a limited edition shot of the INSIDE of the Liberty Bell.

We spent lunch today in Lancaster, PA observing Amish horse and buggies clopping down the street. Chris and Becca hitch up to this cart and get in gear for the trip down to Gettysburg.

The Gettysburg battlefield was toured on our bikes this afternoon. We took off from the visitor center and rode about seven miles around the historic Civil War site. Becca displays her "flying" skills.

Becca makes a googie for the camera as she rides through a row of monuments and cannons. We spent the night with Chris's godparents in Smithsburg, MD.

Day Sixteen - June 21, 2000

Washington DC was today's bike adventure. Among other things, we saw the Jefferson, FDR, Lincoln, and Washington memorials. Here, both Chris and Rebecca browse through the names inscribed on the Vietnam War Memorial.

DC's weather was pleasantly gray and bland for most of the day helping us cool off during our lunch break at the Washington monument. Becca found an eight foot replica of the monument and spends a brief moment trying to scale it.

During a visit to the National Archives, Chris's bike is stolen. For the record, this is the cable that got snapped when the Diamondback was taken. Needless to say, this ruined most of the next couple of days and DC is now officially Chris's LEAST favorite city.
