We were doing good for a while as far as weather went until we started
along the Gulf of Mexico. This is why we have nothing interesting from
Alabama...
...Mississippi...
...or Louisiana.
Okay, maybe Louisiana wasn't all that bad. Steve made friends with
a chip company and got a complimentary box for on-the-road snacking. Apparently
he is of no relation to the owner of Zapp's Chips...
...but we tried anyway. Ron, if you ever see this picture, we didn't
park in your parking space.
This gives you a good idea of the muddy conditions we flopped through
today. Here we are, crossing the Mississippi River again. We may be getting
overly attached to our car, though.
Back in the Lone Star State! Yeehaw!
The visitor center on the Texas Border is an interesting spectacle.
Along the roadside, they've stuck a giant metal star in the ground. Chris
climbed to the top of this section while Becca, our resident rock climber,
complained about the hot metal.
While we were getting ready to continue our route to Houston, we came
across these giant grasshoppers. They are REALLY slow and lazy and jump
like bull frogs: kinda flopping around. Yeah, like tanks though.
We swung through Katy where Chris had a rendezvous with another childhood
friend, Laura Dierschke. We all went on a bike ride around our old stomping
grounds and crashed at a park by Chris's elementary school. The cooler
pretty much saved our lives.
A Blue Bell stop at Randall's was our first break from the moist outdoors
that afternoon. Isn't it wonderful how an ice cream can bring people together!
Sorry, that was pretty cheesy.
Later on in the evening we all went over to the house of Manny and
Carole Gonzales where we learned all about cars and Chris got to take a
quick ride (about 30 feet) in Manny's hot rod.
