Sydney Zappe, Australian Shepherd!
Grinning Sydney

Hi! My name is Sydney, and I am a female Australian Shepherd. I live with the Zappe family in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The photo above was taken on my first 3-day backpack trip in the nearby Pecos Wilderness (thankfully they didn't make me carry my own pack). Too bad they didn't get any pictures of me chasing big horn sheep - I found lots of them, but they were a little out of my league!

Sydney puppy I was born May 20, 1995 in the community of Bosque Farms, down the Rio Grande Valley from Santa Fe. When the Zappes came to choose a puppy I wasn't very clean, but I reminded them of an Aussie that Linda had when she was a girl. They chose my name on the ride home in the car, since it is one of the easier Australian town names to remember (I'm glad they didn't name me Kalgoorlie or Thargomindah)! As a puppy I had a lot more black around my eyes, and people said I had racoon eyes.
I am a purebred Aussie, but my family didn't bother to get my papers. I am a blue merle, which means I have a mottled coat of black, gray, copper, and white. If I have any breed defects, it's my ears that stick up straight when I'm paying close attention to what's going on around me. Now folks jokingly call me "Bat Dog"! But otherwise I'm typical of my breed - midsize (about 40 pounds), highly intelligent (even though Steve called me a blonde dog for a while), and I just can't spend enough time with my family. Please e-mail them and ask them to let me in the house more often.

I'm pretty well trained, and can do the usual sit, down, stay (even stand on my hind legs) - but I haven't the foggiest idea what "come" means. I'll heel on a choke chain after awhile, but if I get loose you won't see me until I feel like coming back.

Bat Dog!

I hope to have more pictures here someday of me doing the things I love to do, like keeping a sharp eye out for bunnies on walks in the neighborhood, playing rough with my toys, and popping bubbles with my nose.

Look! Here's a page all about me at Small Dog Electronics!
