Summer Vacation:
Zappe Trio (June 2000)

Day Three - June 8, 2000

We drove north of Lincoln, NE to celebrate entering the city limits of Wahoo!

Chris was rapidly losing interest in these border crossings, but Becca didn't mind because getting out of the car meant she got to drive next.

Up the road in Ida Grove, IA, we saw the train station which served as the point of departure in 1902 for Steve's grandmother Louise Haderer Schoellkopf to start a new life in the Poplar Creek area of Alberta. The station was subsequently moved to this park.

Here we are at a campground near Manchester, IA. Chris is preparing to chow down on a meal of Polish sausages and ramen noodles, while the mosquitos are already feasting on us.

Day Four - June 9, 2000

Here's a daring mid-bridge shot of the Mississippi River crossing from Iowa into Wisconsin. We couldn't stop on the freeway to get a shot of the border sign, and we're certain you're as disappointed as we were.

In fact, we didn't  take any more decent pictures that day, as we drove through Madison, Milwaukee, and on into Chicago.

Day Five - June 10, 2000

This unique Ukrainian Orthodox church was located near our motel out by Chicago's O'Hare airport.

We parked near Soldier Stadium near the Chicago Lakefront and rode our bikes around downtown. Here is the Buckingham Fountain shooting water higher than the Sears Tower in the background.

Becca decided a shower in the fountain spray would be cool...

... while Chris performed his usual feats of stupidity, nearly crashing into his sister and dumping his bike.

We stopped and enjoyed some of the music at the free Chicago Blues Festival. Becca is admiring the guy blowing the sax here.

We also got into the Field Museum of Natural History and got to see Sue, the world's largest known and most complete T. Rex.

Chris is dreaming of flying out of Meigs Field for real, instead of pretending like he has for so many years with his first airplane software, Flight Simulator. We watch a plane take off, and it was just like the fake thing.

Late in the afternoon we crossed the border into to Indiana to meet with an on-line friend of Becca's. Actually, this photo is a dramatic re-enactment of the crossing taken the following day, because it was really just another high speed freeway border crossing.

Day Six - June 11, 2000

This is Becca with her friend Holly, showing amazing flexibility with their tongues.

We made sure to hit the Michigan border on a rural road so we could get a sign shot. Notice Chris is now the official border crossing photographer.
